Below are the top 5 best PC strategy games of 2023.
Company of Heroes 3
Basically, a reincarnation of the first Company of Heroes, Company of Heroes honors the original gameplay of its predecessor but with newer graphics. Everything just feels fresh; however, the German voices for the Wehrmacht should have been kept in German dialogue, like in the original, other than speaking English, because it makes the Germans feel organic. They also should have added the Soviets as a playable faction, considering Company of Heroes 2 allowed you to play as the Soviets. Other than that, Company of Heroes 3 is the best strategy game of 2023.
Last Train Home
Loosely based on true events, the Last Train Home occurred during the Russian Civil War, right after WW1, between the Red Army Bolsheviks and the Anti-Bolshevik White Army. It is about the Czechoslovakian Legioniares who fought for the Russian Empire to proclaim a new Czechoslovakian state from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which they succeeded. Now, they want to return home but are caught in the Russian Civil War. The game is only a campaign; the task is to help guide the Czechoslovakian men back to their newfound state while being caught in the crossfires of the Russians. You take control of an armored train and must cross Siberia to Vladivostok to escape on a boat and manage the crew. This game is about strategy and careful planning, as the Red Army severely outmatches the Czechoslovakians.
Dune: Spice Wars
This strategy game is based on the well-known Dune novel and film. In the game, you play as the six major factions of the Dune universe: House Atreides, House Harkonnen, The Smugglers, The Fremen, House Corrino, and House Ecaz. Unlike other strategy games, you fight to control sections containing local towns. These locals also fight back, so you must always be prepared. Once a city has been captured, you can gather resources and construct buildings like defense towers and spice harvesters. A prominent natural enemy course would be the sandworms; they can devour your units, including soldiers.
Total War: Pharaoh
Total War: Pharaoh is like other Total War games but takes place in Egypt, the Levant, and Anatolia during the 13th century BCE. As the title suggests, you can play as either the Ancient Egyptians, but you can also play as the Canaanites and Hittites. A unique mechanic of Total War games is that you can command realistic battles with soldiers in real-life settings. An important aspect to look after when fighting is the weather and terrain. Terrain and weather can seriously affect how your units can fight; for instance, sandy terrain penalizes the movement speed of heavier units, and grasses can help hide your units but can also hide the enemy's units. Rain can form mud, reducing the movement speed of heavier units. The position of regiments also matters as it could mean a win-or-lose situation in a battle. It is essential to have units that can flank enemies instead of fighting head-on.
Sanguo's Ambition 4: Three Kingdoms
Sanguo's Ambition 4: Three Kingdoms is one of the most straightforward strategy games ever, making it easier for players to get into the game without much complications. It takes place during the Han dynasty, and you attempt to take control of the 103 cities in the game as you try to unite China. The mechanics are self-explanatory; every city you control allows you to construct buildings with perks, like more money generation and army reserves. You may also research tech and choose different policies that give you bonuses.
